DFW Metroplex under Ice Storm Warning as more accumulation is possible

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) — The metroplex is under an Ice Storm Warning until tomorrow morning.

As much as .50" of ice is possible. Roads become nearly impassable and powerlines are threatened.

Several waves of freezing rain are expected over the rest of the day and overnight.

Freezing rain forms ice when it hits a surface below freezing. Some of the roads that have seen melting are ABOVE freezing so the icing won't happen until nightfall. Most other roads still have ruts of ice or completely iced-over will have the ice immediately accumulate. Same for elevated surfaces, sidewalks and powerlines.

Where total freezing rain amounts creep toward .25", this is where power outages are more likely. The roads can quickly ice over with as little as .10". Several waves of freezing rain are expected overnight. The First Alert continues for at least 24 hours:

Roads are currently in terrible shape and will continue to worsen as the day goes on. So please, stay off the roads if you can.

Temperatures hover around freezing into Thursday morning.

A freezing rain and sleet mix is possible early tomorrow before temperatures warm above 32 degrees.

We could see a burst of wet snow as this cold rain leaves tomorrow afternoon, but since temperatures will be above freezing, it just becomes a brief slush. There will still be icy spots Friday morning since we are forecasting below freezing temperatures Friday morning.
