DFW Commuters Forced To Brave The Cold

CARROLLTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Despite the chilly conditions across the DFW area early Thursday morning, the commute must continue. People heading into work braced for the cold as temperatures dropped into the teens. Those leaving their homes were doing so out of necessity only.

Travelers at the Dallas Area Rapid Transit station at Trinity Mills were waiting in their cars until trains arrived. Only a brave few bothered to stand on the platform. During the pre-dawn hours, this is one of the busiest DART stations in the Metroplex.

And it seemed like everyone who was outside was taking the advice to dress in layers -- that means jackets, gloves and head coverings. "It's normally manageable, like you don't have to have gloves," said Johnny Beard. "But today, you got to have gloves on. Once it gets about 20 degrees, it feels about 10 degrees."

Meanwhile, the Texas Department of Transportation is working to keep DFW area roadways safe. There is no ice on the streets right now, but winter precipitation chances are in the weather forecast beginning on Thursday night, and that is cause for concern.

TxDOT crews on Wednesday night were loading trucks with brine -- a mixture of salt and water that helps keep ice and snow from bonding with the pavement. It is often put down several days before the winter precipitation begins. Crews are focused on treating the major highways and rural roads on Thursday, and will then monitor the entire area heading into Friday morning.

But for now, commuters are just worried about making it to the weekend. "If you don't have to be out today, I wouldn't be out," added Dave Frierson. "If you're going to be out, you should definitely have some layers on. It's pretty cold out here."
