Delonte West Added To Veteran Mavs Core

DALLAS (CBS SPORTS.COM) - The Mavericks opened training camp talking repeat despite missing four key contributors from last season's championship run.

Tyson Chandler agreed to terms with New York. Caron Butler signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. J.J. Barea signed with Minnesota, and Dallas appeared to have little interest in DeShawn Stevenson.

But then, after acquiring Lamar Odom from the Lakers over the weekend, the Mavs added Vince Carter and Delonte West on Monday.

Carter, an eight-time all-star, recently was waived by the Phoenix Suns, who exercised the $4 million buyout clause in his contract. Carter cleared waivers and was signed by the Mavs to a three-year deal that pays about $3 million in the first year, according to the Dallas Morning News.

It's quite a pay cut from the $18 million Carter made last season, but it was all the Mavericks had to offer under terms of the new collective-bargaining agreement. The final two years are partially guaranteed.

Carter, who turns 35 next month, averaged 14.0 points last season.

The Mavericks also reached agreement on a one-year deal with West, a free agent guard who played in only 24 games for Boston last season, averaging 5.6 points and 2.7 assists. West, 28, is expected to back up to Jason Kidd.

"The makeup of the team is probably going to be a little different, but that's just the business of basketball," guard Jason Kidd said. "That happens, but we still believe we can win. We're going to work extremely hard and take pride in being a champion and trying to protect our championship."

The Mavs' veteran nucleus is built around Dirk Nowitzki along with Kidd, Jason Terry and Shawn Marion.

"A championship is the goal," Terry said. "In every training camp you want to set your goals high. Ours is very high, obviously for the reasons of myself, Dirk, J-Kidd, Marion. We've been around a long time. We know what it takes to win."

The loss of Chandler means Brendan Haywood is stepping into the starting center spot, backed up by Ian Mahinmi.
