DART Votes For Arlington Commuter Bus Line Pilot Project
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Arlington could get its first taste of mass transit later this year. Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) voted to move ahead with plans for a commuter bus line, running between the University of Texas at Arlington and the Trinity Railway Express' (TRE) CentrePort Station.
As it stands, DART officials say the details with the City of Arlington, about how the line would be administered, still have to be worked out, but there are hopes that can be accomplished quickly. "The board took the next step to give Arlington an opportunity to have a single commuter bus line," explained DART spokesman Morgan Lyons. "The objective is to have this service in place in August, in time for the start of class at UTA."
While there is a push to get the line up and moving quickly, DART leaders also want to bus to have a certain look and feel. "We want to get everything done as quickly as possible," Lyons said adding, "This will be a uniquely marked vehicle to make it easy for Arlington folks, particularly those around UTA, to recognize the vehicle."
The single bus route would only run on weekdays.
The service from the Arlington College Park District to CentrePort, just east of Highway 360, is part of a two-year pilot project costing some $700,000. The City of Arlington would foot most of the bill, with UTA and Arlington businesses covering the rest.
