Dallas Zoo Taking Votes For New Giraffe's Name

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - She's the newest edition to the Dallas Zoo that captured the heart of the internet.

Last Friday, thousands watched the Aminal Planet live cam as Katie, the giraffe, became a mom for the second time.

Starting Thursday, April 16 at 5 a.m., voting begins to name the Dallas Zoo's new baby girl.  Click here to vote.

While several requests have poured into the zoo to name the calf after children lost to cancer, missing family members, first responders and others.  Katie's keepers have chosen the following three Swahili names:

  • Adia – "a gift"
  • Kanzi – "a treasure"
  • Kipenzi – "loved one"

Online voting is for free, and fans can donate to help rescue and support threatened wildlife in Africa, including giraffes.  All donations will be matched in the baby's honor (up to $25,000) by a friend of the Dallas Zoo.
