DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Kevin Troy Jernigan, a man who owned a tax preparation business in Dallas, pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and assisting in the preparation or presentation of a false or fraudulent individual income tax return after appearing in federal court Tuesday.
Jernigan was the owner and tax return preparer at The Parks 11 in Dallas since 2007.
According to the Department of Justice, during tax years 2007 through 2012, Jernigan prepared and filed more than 1,300 tax returns that contained false and inflated deductions and credits that were intended to produce a fraudulently inflated refund to be paid by the IRS.
The fraudulent income tax returns caused a tax loss of approximately $2.2 million to the United States Treasury.
According to the Department of Justice, Jernigan prepared and filed a 2009 tax return with the IRS on behalf of a taxpayer known as "CJ."
In the return, Jernigan included $27,019 as a business loss when he knew CJ had not incurred this loss. As a result, the tax refund was fraudulently inflated to $5,819, which resulted in a tax loss of $6,432.
Jernigan faces a maximum penalty of three years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
