Armed suspect at Dallas motel fatally shoots self during police encounter, officers say

An investigation is underway after the Dallas Police Department said a shooting involving an officer ended with an armed suspect dead after reportedly turning the gun on himself on Wednesday afternoon.

Initial details were limited, but in a post on X, the department said officers were confronted by an armed suspect at the Mustang Inn along the 400 block of South RL Thornton Freeway, just off I-35E. Dallas Police initially said the suspect was struck after officers opened fire, though new details emerged during a news briefing around 2 p.m.

Executive Assistant Chief Terrence Rhodes said the suspect, identified only as a man in his mid-30s, had multiple warrants out for narcotics and parole violations. Officers, Rhodes said, used Flock technology to track him down. When they arrived, Rhodes said officers encountered the man armed with a long rifle and ordered him to stand down. Rhodes noted one officer fired a weapon at the man, but it's not known now if that shot hit the suspect.

After that, Rhodes said the suspect produced another gun and fatally shot himself.

The department also said no officers were hurt. It is unclear if the suspect fired at officers during the encounter.

The investigation remains ongoing. CBS News Texas will update this article as new details are shared.
