DALLAS (KRLD) - Dallas city council members say they they get complaints about shopping carts on the street, on sidewalks, in medians and alleyways. Last year, the city received 330 complaints about shopping carts abandoned in the right-of-way. Most of the complaints were from the Bishop Arts District of Oak Cliff, far north east Dallas and the Vickery Meadows area.
The city has been rounding up the carts and holding them for grocery store and big box stores to pick up. The ordinance requires the store to pay a $25.00 fee, but Code Enforcement Director Kris Sweckard told the City Council Quality of Life Committee members today that the fee is rarely, if ever, collected.
Managers of Fiesta have been responding to the cart issue by offering shuttle service to customers who need a ride home with their groceries. The grocery store chain has also set up cart coralls at several apartment complexes. Drivers collect them on a regular basis.
Council Members Jenifer Gates and Sandy Greyson are pushing for the city to start destroying the carts and selling them for scrap. The full city council will vote on that proposal in the coming weeks.
