Dallas Church Group Rescued From Flooded Central Texas Hotel
WIMBERLEY (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Authorities have rescued members of a Dallas church group staying at an inn in Wimberley, Texas, that flooded after heavy rains caused a nearby creek to overflow.
Kathleen Haney was among eight members of the Dallas group who found themselves trapped by rushing waters Friday on the second floor of the bed-and-breakfast.
She says National Guardsmen and firefighters strung a rope between the inn's staircase and higher ground, and then guided the church members across.
Haney says at least 5 feet of water snapped nearby trees.
"It was really tricky because one of our members is 4'11" and grandma is 90 years old," said Haney. She told KRLD's Kelli Wiese she feels lucky and said, "I have a bucket list story to tell."
The eight church members and another couple staying at the inn were brought to safety, along with the inn's owners. They were taken to a community center in Wimberley, where about 100 evacuees were getting ready to leave Friday afternoon.
Another church member, Jim Kirkman, told CBS 11 that the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration does this trip every year. He said the waters were so low on Thursday that a few of his fellow parishioners could barely kayak. Fast forward to Friday morning, when the waters were so high they were told to move their cars, two of which were ultimately washed away.
