OXNARD, Calif. (CBSDFW/AP) -- Cowboys running back Darren McFadden will start training camp on the physically unable to perform list because of a hamstring injury that also bothered him in the offseason.
"I'm doing fine," McFadden told 105.3 The Fan. "It's just a little setback. I've got to get it right."
Dallas is hoping McFadden, the top 10 pick by Oakland in 2008, can help replace NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray, who signed with Philadelphia in free agency.
105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher says the Cowboys do not plan on reacting to the injury by adding another back.
Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said the PUP designation (which can change at any time, Dallas believing this might be a week-long injury) should not register as a surprise. But it's a setback for a team planning to replace the departed DeMarco Murray with a Joe Randle-led collection of backs that, at its best will include McFadden.
Linebacker Rolando McClain is on the injured list going into Thursday's first full camp workout. That was expected after coach Jason Garrett said he wouldn't be ready early in camp as he recovers from offseason knee surgery.
Three rookies are starting on active injured lists: lineman Chaz Green (hip surgery), linebacker Mark Nzeocha (knee) and center Shane McDermott (eye infection).
All the players can be activated anytime during camp.
