FORT WORTH (CBS11) – Leap day offers many reason for celebration and people across North Texas aren't wasting any moment of the day to do so.
Matt and Kristine Sessoms welcomed their third child Joshua Titus at 1:37 a.m. He was the first "leap day" baby born at Texas Health Harris Methodist in Fort Worth.
Matt says he was hoping his wife would give birth on leap day.
"Everybody else said other days, but I was like 'no he is going to be a leap year baby'."
"It was exciting. It was special," says Kristine.
While the leap day festivities for the Sessoms surround their baby boy, others are finding different ways to celebrate the day.
Rahr and Sons Brewery in Fort Worth says they're having a leap day party and opening the brewery to customers on a Monday, something they never do.
Craig Mycoskie, the brewery's production manager says, "It's one extra day this year. So might as well just have a little fun with it and open it to the public."
If you happen to be a leap day baby living in Hurst, the city gave out free welcome mats.
"We've got a lot of mats to give away so we hope we have some leap day babies out there," said city spokesperson Ashleigh Johnson.
A quick internet search for leap day freebies will also reveal a long list of discount, and free items at area restaurants and retailer for those who can prove their birthday is February 29.
