Controversial "Campus Carry" Bill May Soon Be Law

AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) — The so-called "Campus Carry" bill could soon be expedited to the senate vis-a-vis an amendment to H.B. 910; a separate bill that gives the authority of a person who is licensed to carry a handgun to openly carry a holstered handgun. If it does, "Campus Carry" - or Texas Senate Bill 11 - will likely have enough support to pass.

Texas Senate Bill 11 mandates allowing concealed handguns at public universities. Private schools could still ban them. The bill was approved in March along party lines.

Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin all allow a form of "campus carry."

The bill has been panned by most student groups, some law enforcement, and key leaders of Texas' top colleges. Critics include William H. McRaven, the retired Navy SEAL who led the raid to kill Osama Bin Laden before becoming the University of Texas' new chancellor.

Gov. Greg Abbott has indicated that he will sign both measures if they reach his desk.
