COLLEGE STATION (AP) - Four cannons recovered from a sunken Confederate warship have arrived at Texas A&M University for preservation.
Officials say the cannons from the CSS Georgia were trucked to the school's Conservation Research Lab on Monday.
The Georgia was scuttled by its crew before Savannah fell to Union forces in 1864.
The cannons were recovered from the ironclad, which is being raised from the Savannah River as part of a channel-deepening project. A&M's research lab in College Station is working on the $15 million removal with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Navy, which owns the ship and its contents.
Experts hope to display many of the artifacts.
