TROPHY CLUB (CBSDFW.COM) - Byron Nelson High School's motto is "Team, Family, Believe, Bobcat Nation," and on Sunday night, every one felt it. At a candlelight vigil, friends, teammates and fellow students at the school came to pay tribute to 18-year-old Josh Hernandez. He was killed Saturday in a car crash. His twin brother, Jesse, survived.
Jesse was released from the hospital and wanted to be with his extended family.
Nearly 2,000 people packed the school gymnasium on Sunday evening. One student who spoke said, "There is a lot of love in this gym."
Another student who addressed the crowd said, "These two kids are awesome. They put others before themselves. They love the Lord."
Josh played on the Bobcats basketball team with his brother. Students said that they inspired so many people, on and off the court. "Josh wasn't just another kid from high school," said one student. "He was different. He cared."
And then, with his principal at his side, Jesse said a few words in return. "I was amazed how much you cared for my brother and for me," he said. He even spoke about the moments right after the accident. "I held him in the car after, during the accident when he was fighting for his life. I believe he saw the light. The Lord said, 'It's time to come home.'"
Jesse told everyone, "Love you all. God Bless."
