ROWLETT (CBSDFW.COM) —Three months after a tornado ripped through Rowlett and other North Texas cities, thousands gathered to run for the city's recovery.
More than 2,000 people were expected to take part in the Rebuild Rowlett 5K Run and Walk on Saturday. The event at Rowlett High School aimed to help hundreds of families and businesses with the recovery effort.
The tornado that hit Rowlett had a path one-half-mile wide and four miles long, run organizers said, affecting more than 1,100 homes and businesses. There were 23 injuries but no deaths when the tornado hit on Dec. 26, according to the organizers, though some people reportedly died later from injuries.
The goal for the run was to raise $40,000 for tornado victims. The proceeds, minus expenses, were to be donated to the Rebuild Rowlett long-term relief fund.
