Church Services Continue Despite Damaged Steeple

TROPHY CLUB (CBS 11 NEWS) - A church in Trophy Club says it will have a celebration when it gets a new steeple. Saturday night's storm with high winds sent the steeple at Fellowship United Methodist crashing to the ground at about 7:15pm

"The definition of church is the people. And you're reminded of that when things like that happen," says Reverend Edlen Cowley, Senior Pastor.

The steeple was mounted to the outer roof of the church, so the steeple's collapse did not allow storm water into the building but a pipe in the sprinkler system broke, causing some water damage to the ceiling of the youth center.

Pastor Cowley says no one was in the building or the parking lot when the steeple fell off the building.

Power was restored to the building before the church's three morning services Sunday. Chris Jordan was among those who attended a bible study Sunday night. He and other members agree with the pastor there should be a celebration when a new cross and steeple are erected.

"A lot of balloons. We will bless the new steeple," says Jordan. They plan to also invite others from the community.

Rev. Cowley says he doesn't know how long it will be before the steeple is replaced. The church is still waiting for an insurance adjuster to inspect the damage.
