Dozens Decontaminated, 26 Taken To Hospitals After Chemical Spill At Texas Water Park
SPRING, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - Over 60 people went through decontamination and at least 26 people of them were taken to area hospitals after a chemical spill at a Hurricane Harbor in the Houston area, officials said.
The Harris County Fire Marshal said it responded to Hurricane Harbor Splashtown in Spring at around 3 p.m. Saturday in regards to an unknown chemical spill.
Officials said those affected by the spill experienced "minor skin and/or inhalation irritation."
During an update later in the afternoon, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said the incident happened in a children's pool area and that people began having respiratory issues.
Officials with the fire marshal's office said the chemical is believed to be a "hypochlorite solution and 35% sulfuric acid." Hazmat crews also responded to monitor the air quality in the area.
According to officials, 39 people refused transport to a hospital. Hidalgo said a child did have to be rushed to Texas Children's Hospital for treatment but is now stable.
Officials are continuing to investigate what caused the chemical to spill into the pool area.
The park closed for the remainder of the day.
