Cap Hell Is A Myth

FRISCO (105.3 THE FAN) - I'm not backing off that long-held belief as it relates to the Dallas Cowboys or to any of the other 31 NFL teams, all of which can make these numbers dance when a desirous option comes along. (Example: As you'll see below, the Denver Broncos only have $5.3 million of room ... but are nevertheless trying to negotiate Von Miller to a contract that will pay him more than $100 million.)

But "cap space'' is nevertheless an interesting topic.

There are two teams that have almost astronomical amounts of room: The San Francisco 49ers have $49 mil and the Cleveland Browns have $43 million. Which proves that "cap room'' isn't a cure-all, as the 49ers and the Browns may be the two worst teams in their respective conferences.

So where is Dallas?

The Cowboys have $6,894,370 of cap room, enough to facilitate a training-camp or in-season signing if needed, enough to be helpful in carryover to 2017 if desired. (And of course, there are existing contracts that can be adjusted to create more room in the unlikely event Dallas suddenly desires to pull off a pricy blockbuster acquisition.)

The number puts them in the "bottom 10" in the NFL ... but the real bottom line on cap space isn't about hard numbers, but rather what do when them in the boardroom and on the field.

The Kansas City Chiefs have just $226,818 worth of room, a non-issue if the Chiefs contend for the Super Bowl. The same will be true of Dallas, and all the rest.
