Cancer Fighting Agency's Finances In Question
AUSTIN (AP) - Prosecutors say a shuttering nonprofit that served a troubled cancer-fighting agency in Texas owes $100,000 more to the state than originally reported to lawmakers.
The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas had raised concerns about unspent donations solicited by the CPRIT Foundation. State officials say the nonprofit caught them flatfooted upon announcing plans to go out of business given the problems surrounding CPRIT.
The CPRIT Foundation reported last week that about $221,000 would be transferred to the agency. But the Texas attorney general's office sent a letter Monday to the foundation stating that CPRIT is owed $327,000.
Prosecutors say they arrived at that number after reviewing the foundation's financial records.
An attorney and spokesman for the CPRIT Foundation did not immediately return an email seeking comment.
