Brutal Temperatures Spilling Into United States

While we are enjoying a very comfortable and warm Monday, we are also watching Arctic air ooze into southern Canada and the northern United States.

Temperatures have plummeted into the negative territory up in southern Canada before a surge of very cold air.  There are two cold fronts on the map....the first one is closer to us and does have Arctic air behind it...with a second push of even colder air moving through Montana and Idaho during the day today.

It is concerning to see temperatures that low moving into the United States, because often this set-up allows the Arctic air to reach us in North Texas.  We do expect to see the colder air arrive Tuesday morning, but the cold airmass will undergo rapid modification, meaning that we won't be looking at brutally cold temperatures locally.

However, the computer models usually do not handle the shallow, cold nature to the airmasses very well.  The upper level pattern will aid in modifying this cold air as it moves south, but we'll see if temperature forecasts are too warm for tomorrow and Wednesday.
