BROWNSVILLE (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a member of a border militia has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after being found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm on two separate occasions.

Prosecutors say 49-year-old Kevin Lyndel Massey was sentenced Monday to 41 months in prison. Prosecutors say the Quinlan man's criminal history includes burglary.

Massey's arrest was sparked by an August 2014 incident in which a Border Patrol agent pursuing a group of immigrants near the Texas-Mexico border fired several shots at an armed man.

The man was identified as a member of a border militia, and prosecutors say that following the shooting, an armed Massey arrived in the area. Two months later, Massey was armed when he was arrested outside a motel.
