Board Of Ed Yet To Tackle Textbooks, Algebra II
AUSTIN (AP) — The Board of Education is in for a long night, with key votes on science books and algebra II still to come.
Members slogged through eight-plus hours of discussions Thursday. But they've not gotten to new science textbooks for use statewide or whether algebra II should be a required high school course.
The board is devising updated academic standards under a curriculum overhaul already approved by the Legislature. It rewrote course requirements to promote vocational training.
The law doesn't require algebra II, and some worry it weakens curriculum.
Others have implored the board not to make algebra II mandatory when implementing the law.
Members also are due to debate new science books amid claims by social conservatives that they aren't skeptical enough about the theory of evolution and climate change.
