IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Irving Fire Department first responders were hit by an 18-wheeler while arriving on scene of a crash.
Three of the firefighters were ejected on impact. They were rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The firefighters were responding to a crash on eastbound Highway 183 between Belt Line Road and Story Road at approximately 4:35am.
The accident involved a white Chevy pickup truck that had been involved in a minor crash. When police officers arrived, the driver jumped out of the pickup and ran. Police got him and determined the driver was intoxicated and had prior DWI offenses.
That's around the time Irving firefighters responded to the accident. An 18-wheeler went through the barricade and hit the fire truck.
The driver of the 18-wheeler died on-scene when his rig caught fire and trapped him inside.
It's unclear what caused the big rig driver to lose control. The crash is still under investigation.
