Big Changes Coming In
The first week of January provided us the best of Texas winter weather. The average afternoon high from New Year's Day thru today has been 62°. Remember that the last day of 2010 it hit 73°, that happened again just last Friday. We've enjoyed lots of sunshine and dry weather as well, it has yet to rain in the 2012.
This is all to change starting in the overnight hours. Rain moves up from the south and temperatures drop into the 40's as a north wind picks up. It stays in the 40's, wet and windy for the next 48 hours.
TONIGHT
Winds start to pick up tonight, light rain moves up from the south. Visibility will stay around 1-2 miles with a cold, windy and wet conditions overnight and Monday morning. Temperatures will stay in the mid-40's all night.
WET MONDAY
It'll be a day of rain, especially as the day wears on. Roads will stay wet, winds will stay up and temperatures will remain steady. Rainfall amounts will get close over an inch with heavier amounts just south of the metro and to the east. We are not expecting river flooding but some street flooding is possible as we get to the end of the day.
WET TUESDAY
The rain continues to add up. Thought the latest drought update puts the core of the metro area in "abnormally dry" category, almost 98% of the state is STILL IN DROUGHT. The heaviest of this rain will fall around the Hill Country which is still in "exceptional drought". Believe me, when you look at the water reservoirs a big rain continues to be very good news for the state of Texas. Around 1"-2" of rain is expected to fall over the metroplex by Tuesday night, some models produce 2"-3". Below is the forecast by the NWS office in Fort Worth:
The surface low that is creating all this wet, windy weather will pull into the Tennessee Valley on Wednesday. We'll have enough of a west wind and sunshine to get highs into the upper 50's before another cold front arrives that night.
COLD END TO THE WORK WEEK
It'll be windy on Wednesday night and Thursday morning as we a glancing blow of cold arctic air comes pouring into north Texas. Highs on Thursday and Friday will only be in the 40's despite mostly sunny skies. By Saturday the cold air slides off to the east, highs will moderate into the 50's by weekend. Right we'll keep Sunday dry but the next rain maker is heading towards us, rain is in the forecast for Monday.
