Back To Temperature Reality This Weekend
Hard to fathom the calendar when you step outside today. Temperatures have climbed in the lower to mid 70s over all of North Texas. We were about this warm on New Year's Eve as well…another fine day. As you might suspect, when it gets this warm this time of year, the weather "is a fixin to change".
Expect a cold front to move through Saturday morning. This is not a really strong cold front, but temperatures behind it this weekend will run 10-15 degrees cooler than what we saw today.
A powerful upper level low will move into New Mexico on Sunday and then slow traverse into Texas during Monday and Tuesday. This slow-moving, closed low will provide a good chance for rain Monday and especially Tuesday. Widespread rainfall amounts of 1-2" is likely over North Texas. This is great news because we received this news today from the National Weather Service:
2011 was Texas' driest year on record as well as its second hottest.
The agency said Friday the average rainfall for the drought-stricken state last year was 14.88 inches. The previous driest average total was in 1917 with 14.99 inches.
The weather service says 2011's average temperature was 67.2 degrees. Texas' warmest year on record was in 1921 with an average temperature of 67.5 degrees.
A surge of cold Canadian air will arrive with a lot of wind on Wednesday evening & Thursday. Temperatures will struggle to get above 40° Thursday afternoon, which the chilly air hanging out through Friday as well. Our computer models are differing a bit as to the strength and depth of the cold air next week, but unfortunately we know that we won't see another week like this week.
