ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Several businesses and two daycare centers in Arlington were evacuated on Wednesday morning after a construction worker struck a gas line. This happened shortly after 8:00 a.m. in the 1900 block of East Abram Street.
Atmos Energy called crews on the scene and they are working to repair the eight-inch line. The company estimated that it will take four hours to fix the problem. The wind on Wednesday is actually helping to disperse the gas and carry it away.
No homes have been evacuated, but people have been forced away from businesses and two daycare centers. There are about 80 people -- children and adults -- impacted by this incident. The parents of those daycare kids have been notified. Everybody is fine.
Lee Tovar with the Arlington Fire Department confirmed that the children are being sheltered in city buses.
East Abram Street has been shut down in this block, and detours are in place to move traffic around the problem area. Drivers who do not need to be in this part of Arlington have been asked to stay away for seek alternate routes.
