Arctic Front Brings Cold Turkey

Our well advertised arctic blast certainly means a big change for Thanksgiving. And as we say goodbye to temperatures running 20 degrees above normal, Thanksgiving Day temps run 20 degrees below normal with wind chill factors in the 30s.

But, the other part of the bone chilling story is the first freeze of the season. Sure many of us are worried about covering up plants and protecting our pets...a routine we are all too familiar with this time of year...but many will find yet another thing for which to be thankful this holiday. North Texans will breath a sigh of relief as the hard freeze puts an end to the dreaded ragweed season!

Temperatures will fall below the freezing mark for most of North Texas on the morning of the biggest shopping day of the year. As is typical, our rural areas and suburbs will be the likeliest areas to get a hard freeze...especially along and west of the I-35 corridor. Our forecast lows will be in the 25-30 degree range will rural areas potentially dipping to the lower 20s. It will be Black Friday, but it won't be black ice thanks to gusty northwest winds Thanksgiving afternoon.

So what makes it a hard freeze? Because some vegetation is more hardy than others, hard freeze criteria shifts slightly. The general rule: sub-freezing temperatures for 2-3 hours. And it looks like many counties will reach this criteria both Friday and Saturday morning.
