WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic officials say long-time Texas Democratic Rep. Ruben Hinojosa has decided to not seek re-election next year.
The 75-year-old congressman was expected to announce his plans at a news conference in Texas later on Friday.
Hinojosa is serving his 10th term in Congress and was first elected in 1996.
His southern Texas district has a heavy concentration of Hispanic voters and usually leans Democratic.
Hinojosa served as chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, which represents Latino lawmakers, in 2013 and 2014.
He has pushed legislation increasing federal aid for Hispanic students and easing the path to citizenship for immigrants in the U.S. illegally.
Hinojosa's decision was described by Democrats in Washington who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.
