DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Accused of killing his girlfriend's 2-year-old baby, Emory Cobb spoke to CBS11 from the Dallas County Jail insisting that police have the wrong man.
It's just one of the startling revelations from an exclusive interview with the man charged with murder.
"I'm just very hurt man. I'm hurt by all this," said Cobb.
"All this," is the death of little Nivea Mack, who suffered a traumatic head injury last week inside the Dallas apartment Cobb shared with her mother.
"I told them that I wasn't in the house and that's where I stand. I wasn't in the house," said Cobb.
The 24-year-old said he was outside the apartment working on a car when his girlfriend yelled for him to come in and he found the little girl not breathing.
"I come inside and Nivea's on floor and she repeats Nivea's dead and Nivea's dead," said Cobb.
When police arrived, Cobb said he was an easy target to blame.
"She doesn't have any kind of criminal record, of course they're gonna get me first because she's squeaky clean and I have priors," he said.
Those priors include arrests for burglary and evading arrest.
"I haven't been in trouble for a very long time," said Cobb.
But Cobb was arrested for family violence just last summer.
Cobb broke down when we asked whether he is a child killer.
"This is my daughter, man this is my stepdaughter it's my child. I was rearing her. I was wanting to grow up and be productive," said Cobb.
We asked the murder suspect who inflicted the injuries that killed Nivea if he didn't, and he couldn't answer.
"It's heinous man but I don't think her mom actually did this," said Cobb. "I have witnesses God is on my side I believe in the judicial system. I will prevail."
Nivea's mother and family are still grieving and declined a CBS11 request for interviews.
Cobb remains jailed with a $150,000 dollar bond.
