Abbott Suggests Teen Shouldn't Have Been Arrested Over Clock

DALLAS (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says police may have erred in arresting a 14-year-old Muslim whose homemade electronic clock led to his detention and suspension from school.

The Dallas Morning News reports the Republican cautioned that he didn't know all the facts. But speaking at a Dallas barbeque restaurant on Thursday, Abbott said, "The last thing we want to do is put handcuffs on a kid unjustifiably."

He added, "It looks like commitment to law enforcement may have gone too far."

Police were called to MacArthur High School in Irving this week when a teacher reported suspicions that the clock Ahmed Mohamed made was a bomb or fake bomb.

No charges were filed, but Ahmed's suspension was not lifted. School officials say his religion wasn't a factor in the incident.
