75-Year-Old Fort Worth Man Charged With Murder

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A 75-year-old Fort Worth man was arrested after he shot and killed another man in his driveway Friday night, police said.

Warren Lynn McSpadden is charged with murder after a dispute turned deadly, police officials said.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Friday at a home in the 3400 block of Fairview Street. Julio Ortiz was inside his house at the time and heard gunshots.

"It was real loud," Ortiz said. "I was just about to lay down and just go to sleep, and take a little nap at the time, and that's when I heard the gunshot."

Ortiz went outside and saw his next-door neighbor, 75-year-old McSpadden, holding a gun, he said.

"He just shot two shots and as soon as I came outside he was done shooting," he said.

McSpadden called 911 and reported the incident, police said.

According to the police report, McSpadden said Gregory Mayfield, 53, was harassing him and wouldn't leave him alone, so he shot him.

Mayfield was found dead in the driver's seat of his pickup truck, which was in the driveway of McSpadden' s home.

"I wouldn't expect anything like this to happen at all," said Ray Dent, who lives down the street from McSpadden. "We've known him for several years, and just Thanksgiving Day my wife prepared a plate, and we brought it down here for him."

Residents along Fairview Street said McSpadden, who they called Curly, has lived in the house for many years by himself. Neighbors would often see him taking a walk through the neighborhood, but said that he typically kept to himself.

"Curly was one of the eccentric men in the neighborhood, walks around the neighborhood and collects aluminum cans," Dent said. "When my wife and I leave, he would actually pick up our mail, throw the paper over the fence and make sure nobody saw we weren't home."

Now as the 75-year-old sits in jail, neighbors are watching his house.
