21 Best Rangers Ever: Julio Franco

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - July 10, 1990 Hundreds of kids in North Texas had their eyes glued to their TV sets as the one Rangers player on the American League All-Star team tore up Wrigley Field in one of the only rain-delayed All-Star games in recent memory.

That Ranger was none other than Julio Franco, who went on to win the All-Star MVP Award.

The season before, Franco came to the Rangers in a much-publicized trade with the Cleveland Indians for fan favorites Pete O'Brien and Oddibe McDowell, but soon proved to Rangers fans what he proved to the rest of the Major Leagues that night.

Franco was a good player on some very mediocre late 80s and early 90s Texas Rangers teams. In his five seasons with the Rangers, he could be found most nights slogging in the infield at Arlington Stadium.

What Julio was known for was his hitting. He made the Silver Slugger team in three of his years here. And he still holds the Rangers record for consecutive games getting on-base with 46.

After leaving the Rangers, Franco went on to play another 13 Major League seasons, finally retiring in 2007 as the oldest position player in baseball history.

For his longevity, and his strength at the plate as a Ranger, you've now voted him #17 on the 21 Best Rangers Ever list.
