AUSTIN (AP) — The top two gun rights bills expected to shoot through the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature, one allowing concealed handguns in college classrooms and the other permitting them to be carried in plain sight most everywhere else, have been slow going so far — and now need a final week push to become law.

The so-called campus carry bill that cleared the Senate back in March is scheduled for a House vote on Tuesday.

Open carry, which has passed both chambers in different forms, ran into turbulence last week as a surprising coalition of Senate liberals and tea-party conservatives teamed up for a vote to restrict police powers.

Both bills now are short on time if they are to be sent to Gov. Greg Abbott, who has pledged to expand gun rights.
