SAN ANTONIO (AP) – The National Weather Service sees Texas shaking off a historic drought but warns that the state isn't out of the woods yet.

Meteorologist Barry Goldsmith on Monday told state emergency responders that a wet winter had dumped as much as 12 inches of rain above normal in parts of Texas. But he says only a hurricane can likely wipe out drought conditions entirely.

Goldsmith delivered a drought forecast to state officials during the first day of the Texas Emergency Management Conference. He says it's too early to predict whether Texas will plunge back into bone-dry conditions this summer despite the recent rainfall.

Last year was the driest on record in Texas, causing nearly $8 billion in farm losses while wildfires scorched nearly 4 million acres.
