RICHLAND HILLS (CBSDFW.COM) - The father who was found guilty of carving a pentagram onto the back of his child was sentenced to 11 years in prison on Friday afternoon. Brent Bartel had been convicted of aggravated assault and injury to a child a day earlier.

The violent incident took place in 2012 at Bartel's home in Richland Hills. The father used a box cutter to carve the design into his 6-year-old son's back. The child managed to survive.

According to documents, Bartel said that he was called by spirits to give them a blood offering to God for his wife's infidelity.

Bartel had originally been found incompetent to stand trial. However, after treatments at several state hospitals, he was finally deemed competent and cleared to for legal proceedings.

The convicted father was sentenced Friday afternoon to 11 years prison for aggravated assault and 10 years prison for injury to a child, but the terms will run concurrently.
