Police in San Jose are providing an update Thursday into a crime spree that stretched across two counties and ended in a deadly shootout with an armed carjacking suspect.

According to officers, the incident started around 2 p.m. Wednesday when the suspect stole a Chevrolet Corvette from a dealership on Capitol Expressway. The suspect then drove more than 40 miles south to Hollister in San Benito County, with a San Jose police helicopter overhead.

In Hollister, police said the suspect got into a shootout with Hollister police officers. He then carjacked another vehicle and drove back to San Jose.

Authorities said the suspect shot at California Highway Patrol officers during the pursuit. No CHP officers were injured.

Police said officers returned fire. As he attempted to carjack another vehicle, the suspect was run over by a patrol vehicle.

The suspect died at the scene. His name has not been released.

Police said the sergeant is recovering in the hospital, where he is expected to recover.
