San Jose Fire Displaces 8 Residents

SAN JOSE (BCN) -- Eight people, including two children, were displaced by an early morning fire in San Jose that broke out at a four-unit building, a fire captain said.

The fire at 377 N. Seventh Street was reported at 3:52 a.m. by a neighbor who called 911, fire Capt. Chuck Rangel said.

On arrival, firefighters discovered smoke and fire pouring from the left side of the structure and flames spouting from its roof, Rangel said.

Crews searched the four-unit building and found that the residents had all safely evacuated. No injuries have been reported.

Rangel said that the six adults - three men and two women - and two children displaced by the fire will receive some form of assistance from the American Red Cross.

A spokesman for the Red Cross said assistance could vary depending on the individuals' needs, and most often takes the form of temporary lodging at a nearby motel or a line of credit for purchasing clothing.

Firefighters laid hose lines and knocked down the fire by 4:45 a.m. It was fully contained at 5:08 a.m., Rangel said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, although Rangel said extensive damage to the building's exterior indicates it may have ignited outside the structure.

"Most of the charring, most of the burning, is on the outside, so it's possible that it started on the exterior and climbed into the attic through the second floor," Rangel said.
