Authorities in Santa Rosa are investigating a fatal accident Tuesday morning that left a pedestrian dead in the town's Cherry Road historic district.

Police initially issued an alert shortly before 7 a.m. on social media saying westbound College Ave. was temporarily closed at Orchard St.

College Ave. was still closed over three hours later. Santa Rosa police did not provide much information in regards to the deadly incident, but confirmed at around 2:30 p.m. that officers were investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian.

Police shared a photo with the post that showed a silver Chevrolet truck with front-end damage. Crime scene tape was visible cordoning off the road behind the truck.

Police later confirmed that officers and paramedics were called to the intersection of College Ave. and Orchard St. at around 6:15 a.m. after a vehicle struck a pedestrian collision, with multiple witnesses calling 911 to report the accident.

Arriving officers found a female who had suffered significant injuries lying in the roadway of College Ave. just west of the intersection with Orchard St. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel.

Also at the scene was a grey Chevy Silverado pickup truck with front end damage. The driver of the Chevy, a 21-year-old Sonoma County resident, was uninjured and remained at the scene. Police interviewed the driver and several witnesses and determined the female pedestrian was crossing College Ave. in the crosswalk. She had nearly reached the other side of the roadway when she was struck by the Chevy as it traveled westbound on College Ave.

The driver was cooperating with the investigation and showed no signs of impairment, police said. Speed does not appear to be a factor. It is unclear if the pedestrian was walking or running in the crosswalk. It was still dark outside when the collision happened, according to authorities.

The names of the driver and deceased female were not released pending notification of next of kin. Anyone with information regarding this collision are encouraged to contact Officer Zepeda at 707-543-3636.
