'Hobbit' Slays Box Office Competitors For Late Year Round-Up
Four movies that just premiered in theaters broke into the top ten, but it's hardly a surprise that The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies came out on top of this weekend's box office numbers.
Including the earlier week's ticket sales (the film premiered on Wednesday), Hobbit is already expected to bank more than its previous installment, The Desolation of Smaug.
It looks like the changes Peter Jackson made to the movies have paid off. Namely, as Box Office Mojo points out, Smaug's demise was wrapped up at the beginning of Five Armies, rather than at the end of Desolation of Smaug, which drew many fans back to the theater when they might have skipped out.
Additionally, the title for the movie's adaptation, originally titled There and Back Again, was altered to the film's title, The Battle of the Five Armies, to sound a bit more exciting for movie-goers. Despite the fact that the movie may not bank as much as previous installments did, it was a wise choice that paid off—the film is making a significant profit.
Other premieres Annie and Night at the Museum, opened to lukewarm audiences. Still, Annie, which was more or less a low-budget film, made a decent showing in terms of ROI. Museum, on the other hand, floundered despite its high production value.
Bollywood comedy P.K. entered the top ten in an impressive $3 million + debut. It will likely earn around $8 million by the time it closes.
