Witness To Attack On Yuba County Deputy Calls For Help From Squad Car

MARYSVILLE (CBS13) — A witness used a sheriff's deputy's squad car radio to call for help after she saw him being attacked.

Investigators say the Yuba County Sheriff's deputy was attacked when serving civil documents at a home on I Street in Marysville.

The woman called for backup.

"Officer is down, please help. Backup immediately," she said.

Moments later the deputy is heard calling for help.

"I'm down. I'm down. I need an ambulance."

Jill Fair lives across the street and took pictures of the scene.

"I just saw him down on the ground and they were treating him and then they took him to the ambulance," she said.

Officers found the suspect about a block away. Joseph Hazen, 38, was taken into custody for attempted murder and a parole violation after investigators say he used a metal object to attack the deputy.

The deputy remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
