Police Find Loaded Gun Buried In Sacramento Park's Bark

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Police found a loaded gun buried in a Sacramento park where children could get to it.

It was a normal Monday afternoon at Robla Community Park at Bell and Rio Linda boulevards in north Sacramento. Children were scooting across the playground, just having a good time.

So when Josh White learned a stolen gun was found buried by the swings where his 8-year-old daughter Madison plays, he was upset.

"That's pretty crazy, it ain't right," he said. "Yeah, that just upsets me."

Sacramento Police say they received a call of shots fired at the park Sunday night. When they showed up, they stopped two people and found the hidden, loaded gun buried in park bark.

They arrested 19-year-old Da'Von Johnson. The stolen gun was found not far from where Johnson was standing. He was booked into the county jail on weapons charges and gross negligent discharge of a firearm.

"Anything could have happened," said one woman at the park Monday. "Very dangerous.

"Knowing that people have guns out here and there's always a lot of people out here, somebody could get hurt," a basketball player said.

Including a child like Madison. "I'd go to my parents and tell them I found it," she said.

Not every kid would. Madison's dad is just relieved police showed up when they did.

"Just glad they found it and not someone else," he said.

Police say this is an example of the community being aware and not just letting it go but calling to report the gunshots. That way, officers were able to make an arrest and get a stolen weapon off the streets.
