Parents Of Severely Abused 3-Month-Old Boy Convicted of Second-Degree Murder

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A Sacramento couple has been convicted of second-degree murder in the death of their three-month-old son.

Terry Scott and Ashleigh Smith were convicted by jury of second-degree murder and assault on a child causing death, according to  Shelly Orio, a spokesperson for the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.

Three-month-old Tyrese was taken to the hospital on July 24, 2014 after a Sacramento Fire Department crew responded to an emergency call in the 2900 block of North Meadows Drive infant, say Sacramento police.

The infant was first taken to a nearby hospital, then transferred to the UC Davis Medical Center due to his critical condition.

Detectives soon started their investigation and interviewed the infant's parents, 27-year-old Ashleigh Smith and 19-year-old Terry Scott. Both were booked into the Sacramento County Jail on July 24 on felony child abuse and neglect charges.

Police say that at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, the infant died.

Scott and Smith face a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for June 10.
