14 students suspended after 6 fights unfold on Modesto junior high school campus
MODESTO — More than a dozen students face suspension or expulsion after a rash of fights broke out at a junior high school in Modesto.
The district, Modesto City Schools, thinks the fights may have been planned as a way to end the school day. It happened Thursday at Roosevelt Junior High School in Modesto.
Modesto City Schools said nothing like this has ever happened at any of its schools and its something they're going to keep a close eye on.
Video sent to CBS Sacramento shows kids screaming as their classmates throw punches and wrestle each other to the ground. The district said six separate fights were reported.
No serious injuries were reported and all fights were broken up by resource officers quickly. But it resulted in 14 students being suspended, with three of whom are being recommended for expulsion.
One student is being investigated by Modesto police.
"School yesterday was never at risk of being canceled and we want to get information out to students that if you're involved in more altercations, if you're involved in any altercations, it's going to result in disciplinary action," said Linda Mumma Solorio, district spokesperson.
In response, the district has upped its security -nd sent a message to parents saying that any physical violence on campus will not be tolerated.
One parent who wanted to remain anonymous said that bullying has been an issue at this school and wants the district to do more to protect its students.
"I think what the school needs is for them to focus on what they are doing with the students that are causing all of this," the parent said.
There have also been a number of videos of the fights circulating on social media. The district wants parents and students to know that filming or encouraging fights could also lead to disciplinary action.
