2 e-bike riders killed in Sacramento County crash; driver arrested
Two people riding e-bikes died after they were struck by a vehicle Monday night in Sacramento County.
Officials with CHP's East Sacramento division said a driver was speeding on Eagles Nest Road and struck two men riding e-bikes near Woodring Drive.
The driver then continued off the road and crashed through a fence. Officers said the driver and one passenger ran from the truck but were later caught. The driver has since been arrested and was identified as a 24-year-old. According to the CHP, the suspect was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI causing great bodily injury or death, felony hit-and-run, and DUI.
Two other people who were in the truck were also taken to the hospital; authorities have not commented on their conditions.
Both e-bike riders died from their injuries. Their names have not been released.
CHP said investigators believe DUI was a factor in the crash, and officials added that witnesses told them the people involved had been hanging out together and appeared to have been drinking.
