Truck lands upright, slams into Robinson Township apartment building

A crash scene in Robinson Township this morning left people doing a double-take after a pickup truck ended up lodged straight into the Chestnut Ridge apartment building.

First responders say the truck traveled a significant distance before coming to its final stop. When crews arrived, the scene raised immediate questions about how something like this could happen.

First responders said the truck traveled from Bayer Road, drove through a field, went past a hill and then went over the hillside. Tire tracks can still be seen leading to a guardrail, which the truck struck before flipping and slamming into the Chestnut Ridge apartment building. The apartment is vacant.

Video from the scene shows the extent of the damage, making it clear the truck went on a ride before becoming mangled and embedded into the building.

"That's insane. I have never seen anything like that," said Weston Schlei, who has lived in the apartment complex for two years.

Crews later worked to remove the truck, an interesting process that required dragging it back up the hill. Police say the crash happened shortly after 4 a.m. It remains unclear exactly how the truck traveled the full distance from Bayer Road into the apartment complex.

"Like, wow. That's a really insane crash. How does that even happen?" said Schlei.

One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Drone video from the scene shows the steep hill above the complex where the truck went off the road before crashing through the guardrail and into the building. Despite the damage, officials say no one was living in the apartment at the time. Damage inside the building was limited, though parts of the truck, including a taillight, were visible from inside.

"I feel very fortunate that wasn't my apartment that got hit like that," said Schlei. "I would definitely be concerned if I lived right next to that road because it's a steep decline."

Robinson Township police say the investigation is ongoing. When asked whether charges would be filed against the driver, police said they had no comment at this time.
