Top 5 Weather Events Of 2012

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - As is always the case, it was an event-filled year with regard to our weather.

Meteorologist Dennis Bowman sat down and came up with a list of the top five weather events of 2012.

No. 5 - The Month Of March.

It was the warmest March in Pittsburgh history with an average temperature of 51.5 degrees.

The month featured 11 days in a row of 70 degrees or higher and three days went to 80 degrees or above.

On March 23, the National Weather Service declared an early start to the growing season as trees and plants were budded out.

No. 4 - The First Day Of June.

Severe thunderstorms produced a tornado in Ligonier with structural damage and many trees down. There was also a microburst on Neville Island.

It was the day the RMU golf dome collapsed as people scurried to safety.

No. 3 - May 29.

A widespread hail and damaging wind event. Trees and lines were brought down with power outages across the North Hills.

Winds also gusted to 63 mph in Mars.

No. 2 - The Damaging Winds Of June 29.

Large hail and trees were down all across the area. Winds were clocked to 100 mph in northern West Virginia.

This was referred to as a Derecho with microburst winds over several states.

No. 1 – Oct. 29-31 - The Effects Of Superstorm Sandy.

Over three inches of rain soaked Pittsburgh, which was accompanied by 40 to 50 mph winds.

Many trees came down and heavy snow fell in the ridges southeast of the PIttsburgh.

A total of one to three feet of snow fell there and the National Guard was called out to rescue stranded motorists in Preston County, W. Va,

Power was out in West Virginia and Maryland for weeks and Sandy delayed Halloween festivities until Nov. 3.
