Third Suspect In Fatal East Busway Shooting Turns Self In

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – After a month long search, the suspect who was known only as "Blue" is now in the Allegheny County Jail after turning himself in to police.

Jequan Frierson, 20, of Hazelwood, walked with his head down. He said nothing to reporters as he made his way inside Major Crimes on the North Side with his attorney, Blaine Jones.

Jones says he never left the area and was not hiding, just waiting for the right moment to turn himself in.

KDKA's Kym Gable Reports:

"I am not sure how he was identified, all I can say is police officers did their work going around the community asking about 'Blue,' and 'Blue' contacted my office and here I am today," said Jones.

Frierson is the third suspect in the Oct. 8 shooting at the East Busway in Homewood.

KDKA's Brenda Waters Reports:

The victim, 21-year-old Omar Islam, was sitting on a bench waiting for the bus. He was shot seven times.

Two other suspects, 20-year-old Desmond Young and 16-year-old Jordan Bey, both of Homewood, have admitted their involvement and are already in jail.

Police say the three planned to rob somebody that night and Bey told investigators he was the shooter. Bey has been charged as an adult.

Sources say Frierson also confessed, but he said nothing when KDKA's Brenda Waters asked him if he was involved or if he planned it.

The victim's family says this is final closure.

KDKA's Brenda Waters Reports:

Islam's aunt, Florine Gandy told KDKA's Brenda Waters she hopes the three suspects have some remorse for what they did.

Waters: "Did you ever think they would find this third guy. Police only knew him as 'Blue?'"

Gandy: "I thought they would find him, eventually. Somebody had to know his real name. Maybe guilt eventually made him turn himself in. Yes, eventually I thought they would find him."
