Study Examines Economic Impact Of Marcellus Shale Industry

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Drilling in the Marcellus Shale is generating tens of thousands of jobs, according to a new Penn State study.

The study, funded by the Marcellus Shale Coalition, also finds that if the pace of drilling keeps up at the current rate, the Marcellus Shale formation will become the leading supplier of natural gas in the nation, producing a projected one-fourth of the nation's supply.

The study estimates 140,000 jobs – directly and indirectly – are dependent on the industry.

"These are all jobs that but for the presence of this industry would not exist," Kathryn Klaber, a spokesperson for the Marcellus Shale Coalition, said.

Officials with the industry acknowledge they have a tough road ahead, trying to convince opponents that drilling can be done in an environmentally safe manner.
