Steelers Fans Disappointed By Opener Loss

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A new year and a new season gives Steelers fans lots of reasons to be hopeful and optimistic.

They had won 10-straight home openers at Heinz Field and no one expected anything different.

"For the year 10 and six and today," said Steelers fan Terry McGovern.

"Twenty-four-to-10 we still got Dick LeBeau on our side," said fan Mike Schindler.

"It's absolutely a big deal if they win this game," said fan Jackie Reinhart. "I think it will get the city excited and off to a good start for the season."

Meanwhile, at Fanatics in Squirrel Hill, Steelers fans were fanatical about their chances of having a good year.

"I think we're definitely going to the playoffs and we'll see from there," said Steelers fan Doug Schriver.

The game started on a positive note, when the Titans gave up a safety, but things went downhill for the Steelers.

Isaac Redman fumbled the ball into the end zone and by halftime Tennessee was winning the game. That brought some serious concerns to the surface.

"It's kind of what I thought was going to happen," said fan John Harkulich. "We still have a second half to play, we're not down that much we can still pull it out."

"Our scoring ability is limited," said fan Shelby Greer, "clearly I'm very concerned for this season. I think our talent is diminished. I don't think we have a chance."

As the second half continued, it was clear this was not going to be a good day for Ben Roethlisberger and the offense. It was hard for fans to hide their frustration.

The Steelers scored a touchdown, but it was too little to late -- they ran out of time and suffered an embarassing loss in the home opener to the Tennessee Titans.

"It was a real disappointment," said fan Tom Henry. "I'd say that even after a bad preseason, you don't think the team is going to do it like that."

It's going to be a long season, thank God for the Pirates.
