Spartan Mag's Jim Comparoni Discusses Narduzzi To Pitt Rumors

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) – Jim Comparoni of SpartanMag.com joined the Starkey and Mueller Show to share insight on Pitt's search for a new head football coach, as numerous outlets reported Tuesday that Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi will assume the head coaching role at Pitt.

Though he couldn't confirm it's a done deal, Comparoni, who covers Narduzzi and the Spartans, said all signs indicate he'll become the next head coach at Pitt.

"It looks like it's definitely going down now. You're starting to see tweets from former players now, and those guys are usually pretty well-connected. They're congratulating Pat Narduzzi," said Comparoni. "There's certainly a lot of smoke, and it looks like it's definitely going to happen. A lot of people here are very supportive of him. They hate to see him go, but they're happy for him."

Comparoni said a clear challenge facing Narduzzi if he is hired at Pitt will be handling both sides of the ball, not just defense.

Several teams have courted Narduzzi for head coaching positions in recent years, but according to Comparoni, he has turned all of them down because he didn't think they were the right fit.

"He wasn't going to take just any job," said Comparoni. "He turned down UConn, he turn down Colorado State, a couple years ago he turned down Akron and some other MAC schools. He has not been in a hurry to leave. He's been saying all along it would have to be the right place for him to leave."

If Pitt does prove to be "the right place" for Narduzzi, Comparoni thinks he could turn Pitt into a real contender in the ACC.

"No disrespect to the ACC or the schedule, but there's low-hanging fruit there," said Comparoni. "You get something going and you can put some wins together."

Comparoni adds Pitt fans shouldn't fear Narduzzi will follow suit with previous Pitt head coaches by using the job as a stepping stone in a career.

"Chryst was a Wisconsin guy. Going back there is a little bit different," said Comparoni. "If you get Pittsburgh going, I don't know why you would leave."
